Breaking the Sound Barrier for Christ

Newsletter for February 2010

Dear supporters of the deaf ministry:

Time goes by too fast and there are too many things to do, but at last I am getting around to sending out a newsletter.

Recently I returned from Jamaica where I attended the annual board meetings which lasted two days.  Then I helped at the CCCD, went with a group to have a service in a Christian day school, attended the meeting of the deaf fellowship which allows me to see a lot of the former deaf students, and saw some of my friends off campus.  I always stay with the director and his wife so that gives us time to catch up on things.  Then I joined an evangelistic team in Montego Bay for three days.  We had two outdoor meetings at which we gave out New Testaments and gospels of John/Romans.  We also had services in five different churches every evening (the group split up each night), and had services in several schools during the daytime.  One school has 1600 children and another 600 so a lot Bibles were given out very quickly.  The whole trip was a blessing.

It was especially exciting to talk to Damian Campbell , pastor of the deaf church at CCCD, and learn that he is looking for a place in Savannah La Mar to start a deaf church.  He has some others who will help with the preaching.  They already go to a deaf service in Kingston once a month.  So please pray that pastors to the deaf will come along to help him with these needed ministries.  The deaf in these areas are excited as are the parents.  Can you imagine not having any church to go to where you can understand the preaching?  That’s why this is so needed.

Our sign language classes ended with 32 people last term and now we are preparing to start again in March.  We have already gotten some new people who want to take the classes.  We may have to split the class if  it gets too large.  This is good however; we want more people to be able to communicate with the deaf.

I have two speaking engagements this month in new places.  Pray for those.  One is in my own church where I will be speaking about serving the Lord with hands and how that relates to the deaf ministry.  Then in late Feb.-early March I will be in Florida where I have three supporting churches and plan to visit each of those.  Then in April I have been invited to participate in a mission conference at Harvest Deaf Baptist Church in Ringgold, Ga.

In May I will be a Odosagih for two deaf retreats and one special friends camp.  In June the deaf retreat will be held at Odosagih and another special friends camp.  Then July and August I will be the Bible Conference full time with another special friends camp coming up at the end.  So it seems my calendar is already full right through the year.

While in Jamaica I saw Joan Page, missionary nurse from Jamaica to Haiti.  Her family and her house are OK.  Several of the deaf perished in the quake and others have moved near her.  She will interpret as needed for them.

Sheldon and Rachel Burkett are finishing up their 4th year in college and have one more year to go to finish their courses.  They are very much needed in Jamaica so pray that they can get back there soon.  Thus far I have been able to send their tuition which I promised, plus their rent each month.  If any of you would like to have a part in their support, please let me know.  God is working in their lives and they are just part of the fruit of the deaf ministry.  They will also need monthly support as they go back to Jamaica to pastor the deaf church working with Damian.

Thank you so much for the support which is sent so faithfully.  The Bible says that some sow, some water, some reap, and I thank each of you who have a part in the process.

                                                                                    Yours for the deaf,
