Breaking the Sound Barrier for Christ

Newsletter for December 2009
Dear Friends,

Greetings from cold New York!  Thus far it has been tolerable and I have managed to escape from it for a while.  I went to Debbie's for Thanksgiving and they arranged a big 80th birthday party for me.  That was fun seeing the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends and family.

2009 started out with weeks of physical therapy after breaking my arm in November.  The therapy was     worse than the break!  Especially when I went to Jamaica.  I could not go unless I arranged for therapy in Jamaica.  This was done.  My wrist and fingers would not bend easily, but the Jamaican therapist made them bend!  Ten months I am glad but at the time I was not.  Fortunately, my doctor was right and I am back playing the piano, reaching octaves, doing my work and signing just as before.

I went to Jamaica for the board meeting in January.  Charnell and I went down early and worked in office and classrooms before the meetings.  In January 2010 I plan to attend the meetings and then join up with an evangelistic team of Price Harris and Richard Green for three days before returning home.

My annual trip to Florida came in March when I visited three supporting churches and did some music there.  I always stay with my sister, Jan in Orlando and visit friends and family when not busy.

The deaf ministry has kept me very busy through the year.  We had 32 in sign language this year.  We offer two classes-one for beginners and one for 2nd level.  Many people are interested in learning for various reasons.

In May I attended a mission conference in Atlanta and also visited Harvest Deaf Bible College when Rachel and Sheldon Burkett are students.  They are now in their 4th year with one more to go.  The sale of my CDs goes to help pay their tuition.  Right now I have 4 CDs and one more in the making right now.  One of my former students in Jamaica graduated this year and is now teaching in early childhood education at CCCD.  That is always a joy for me to see.

Many speaking opportunities came up this year in churches, organizations and even in public school.  It's great to be able to influence people for missions and especially the deaf ministry.  The needs are so great missionaries to the deaf in the islands and throughout the entire world.  The Jamaican deaf are very fortunate that the gospel came to them 50 years ago and they are now reaching out to other islands.
